2 What gems or thin stones can be 4 What jewels can be done with engraved stones ? As old as civilization is the engraved gems. This art of engraving thin stones is called gliptica. Sumerios, Egiptians, Phoenicians , Greeks and Etruscan made ir wonderful, being in Augustust time when this technique achieves great splendour and perfection, only surpassed in the renaissance. Every roman citizen was carring his favourite gem with their personal characteristics. That custom lingers at present reflected in the engraved shields, letters, emblems and anagrams ... Most of the engraved stones place in the composition of silice or quartz, rock crystal, jasper, agate, chalcedony, cormalina and all precious stones, rubi, shapphire and emerald. It also can be engraved in bituminous, jet and amber, the metal, hematite, malachite and the origin of organic as coral, ivory and nacre. This is carried out by carving through attrition, produced by rod steel and diamond. If the motif is carved into hollow it is called "entalle" o "low relief". If you are eroding the contour it is called "cameo" or "high relief". This whole process will be carried out manually and the results are unique and personal. You can make jewels as : rings, earrings, brooches, buttons, cufflinks, tiepins, bookmarks and so on. You can send your shield or drawing to be engraved by mail or e-mail and I would put in touch to give a budget. Regarding the coat of arms I have a bibliography where I can find your surname´s shield.
